Even before the current EU regulation comes into force, manufacturers of household, office and industrial electrical and electronic equipment are well aware that most of their products waste a great deal of energy in standby and off modes.

The wastage in 2005 alone was estimated at 47 terawatt hours (TWh), equivalent to 19 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. Unless specific measures are taken, this is expected to increase to 49 TWh by 2020. The new legislation therefore aims to achieve a significant reduction in wastage, and imposes a maximum power consumption in off and standby modes of 0.5 watts.

There is also a much stricter general requirement that manufacturers improve the energy efficiency of all electrical and electronic equipment during normal operation.

These ecodesign requirements must not reduce the products’ effectiveness or have adverse effects on health, safety or the environment. In particular, the benefits of a product’s reduced energy consumption should outweigh any additional environmental impact caused by its manufacture.

For these reasons, we are working even more intensively on new technology, including the following:
